January 9th is Affair Day!

Affair Day is less about meeting with a friend you already have than reaching out to find one. I read the other day that Tinder's busiest day of the year is January 6th, so maybe there's something about this time of year?

Whatever it is, hearts are aflutter!

What can you do to get ready? If you're still on the hunt, you can dust off your old profile and prepare for the influx of new users. If you're looking for an extra side-piece, as some of my clients have been want to do, then open a new account.

Ashley Madison Changes

In other news, there have been changes to how AM does business. The changes mostly impact women, but they will make life better for men too.

Women Paying to Message

Women now have to pay for messaging just like men.

Pros -

• This is good news for men because most legit women typically don't message men, but now, if they do, there's less chance you're a scammer. As for scammers, they almost always message men. So consider this move a roadblock to mass scammers operating scammer mills running dozens of accounts because they probably won't pay.
• For real women, they will still get a flood of messages, so they won't have to pay if they don't want to.

Cons -

• Scammers might switch to passive accounts, meaning they'll let you message them first. The fishing's not as good, but men message like horny teens, so there's a good chance they'll still ping scammer accounts.
• Women will have to put payment information on AM to message. And while I'm sure we are safe doing that, the 2015 info breach wasn't that long ago.
• I recommend women search for their guy and ignore their inbox, which will mean added costs. I still recommend this because if you want a certain type of guy, it's easier to go find him and ignore the rest. I've written about this on Substack.

Bottom line? Less scammers are good, but don't drop your guard. Passive scammer accounts might start popping up. Lone-wolf scammers will probably buy credits. Sure, their payment info will be on file with AM and releasable with a warrant, but if you complain to the police, you are going to blow up your life. Is the $300 you lost worth that risk? No. And scammers are banking on that. The scammer situation might improve, so this should give you peace of mind.

Account Verification

Users can now verify their accounts to get blue checks beside their account user name. I did mine, and it took five minutes.

Pros -

• It means there's a person behind a blue check account, and large scammer operations won't be able to verify.
• AM leak of 2015 - people will be reluctant to let AM know who they are...but AM isn't doing the verification. A third party is involved, and all AM is given is an assurance that the account has been verified.
• Maybe AM will stop suspending women's accounts mid-convo for passing on a Telegram or email addy. I'm not sure on this, and I'm reluctant to test it because I was suspended for a week and it sucked.

Cons -

• AM leak of 2015. There are still questions about what the third-party's security is like. However, if they handle IDs, etc., you can be sure their insurance company dictates their security practices. A verifier will only get one chance to fuck this up - and an insurance company is not looking to make a billion-dollar payout.
• A scammer might be using the blue check to gain your confidence and pull you in.

Bottom line? A lot of people won't verify because they don't trust AM or anyone else with their dirty affair info. When it comes to verified and unverified accounts, I recommend the usual amount of caution. Don't automatically think unverified people are scammers, and don't assume blue check accounts aren't.

Just because someone handed over their DL and got a blue check doesn't mean they aren't a rapey, scammy asshole, or honey pot trap waiting for you.

How to Avoid Scammers

While these moves above should reduce scams, they won't eliminate them. The surest way to detect a scam, regardless of blue checks or paid messages, is getting a $$ money $$ ask from the person on the other end of the chat.

If they ask for $$$$ they are not going to have sex with you.

If you send $$$$, you will never hear from them again.

I'm going to do a podcast on this and will talk about how I think how a lone-wolf scam could go down. It's easy to say don't fall for a scam, but you need to know how it might unfold.

I think I know because I've seen it twice, now with my clients. In one case, we hadn't discussed security before it happened. In the second, we weren't consulted before money was sent, despite previously recommending against sending money to anyone.

What I've done to mitigate this is to add a security briefing to our intake call.
